What counts as a dental emergency?

Worth a same-day phone call:

  • A tooth knocked out or knocked loose
  • A broken or cracked tooth, especially with pain or a sharp edge
  • Severe toothache, or pain with facial swelling
  • A lost filling or crown
  • Bleeding from the mouth that does not settle
  • An injury to the lips, gums or tongue from a knock or fall

Not sure whether it can wait? Phone anyway — describing the problem to our team costs nothing and helps you make the right call.

After hours and severe emergencies

We see emergency patients during normal opening hours, Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm. Outside those hours, help is still close by: the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is right here in Woodville South, and its emergency department is the appropriate place for severe facial trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. For urgent dental problems overnight or on weekends, the Australian Dental Association SA also lists after-hours emergency services — then call us the next business day so we can arrange follow-up care.

Knocked-out tooth: the first 30 minutes

An adult tooth has the best chance of being saved when it’s handled correctly and a dentist sees you quickly — ideally within about 30 minutes.

  1. Hold the tooth by the crown — never touch or scrub the root.
  2. If dirty, rinse very briefly in milk or saline. No tap water on the root, no wiping.
  3. If you can, place it gently back in the socket and bite softly on a clean cloth.
  4. Otherwise keep it moist in milk. Never dry, never in water.
  5. Call us straight away on 08 8244 3677.

Baby teeth are different: don’t put a knocked-out baby tooth back in — it can damage the adult tooth underneath. Call us for advice instead.

Children’s dental emergencies and the CDBS

Children have a talent for finding the hard way to test a tooth. We see children of all ages, and eligible children can have emergency examinations and many treatments covered under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) — up to $1,158 over two calendar years, bulk-billed at our practice, with no out-of-pocket cost for covered services. If you’re not sure whether your child is eligible, our reception team can check for you when you call. You’ll find more on our children’s dentistry page.

Toothache, swelling and broken teeth

Toothache: rinse with warm salty water, floss gently to clear trapped food, and use over-the-counter pain relief per the packet. Never place aspirin against the gum — it burns the tissue.

Broken tooth: save any fragments in milk and cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or dental wax from a pharmacy.

Lost crown or filling: keep the crown, avoid chewing on that side, and book promptly.

Facial swelling with fever or difficulty swallowing can mean spreading infection — never ignore it. Call us, or seek urgent medical care if it’s worsening quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see a dentist today in Woodville?
Call us on 08 8244 3677 as early in the day as you can. We set aside time for emergency patients during opening hours, and our reception team will tell you honestly how soon we can see you. The earlier you call, the more options we have.
How quickly does a knocked-out tooth need to be seen?
Ideally within about 30 minutes. Keep the tooth moist — back in its socket if possible, otherwise in milk — and phone us immediately. Even if more time has passed, it is still worth calling; a dentist can assess whether the tooth can be saved.
What should I do about a toothache at night?
Rinse with warm salty water, floss gently to clear trapped food, and use over-the-counter pain relief according to the packet. If you develop facial swelling, fever, or trouble swallowing, seek urgent medical care — the Queen Elizabeth Hospital emergency department is in Woodville South. Otherwise, call us when we open.
Is a broken tooth an emergency if it doesn't hurt?
It still needs prompt attention. A crack or chip can expose the softer inner tooth, which may become sensitive, decay, or break further under chewing pressure. An early assessment is usually simpler and less costly than waiting for it to become painful.
Are children's dental emergencies covered by the CDBS?
For eligible children, yes — emergency examinations and many common treatments fall under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, which we bulk-bill. The CDBS provides up to $1,158 over two calendar years. Reception can check your child’s eligibility when you call.
Do you charge more for emergency appointments?
There is no special emergency loading during normal opening hours. You pay for the examination and any treatment provided, and you receive a written quote before treatment begins, so there are no surprises.
