Frequently Asked Questions

What toothbrush do you recommend for children - electric or normal?
Our dental team will help you choose the appropriate toothbrush and oral hygiene regime for your child. It is not only the type of toothbrush that gives the best result but the ability of the child to use it and to use it effectively. Early on parent supervision and assistance during brushing is a crucial part of your child’s oral health.
Why is fluoride important and when do the children start using fluoride toothpaste?
Fluoride is important as it hardens the enamel making it more resistant to acid attack from the plaque. We recommend a low fluoride children’s toothpaste from between 2 and 6 years of age. At this time they can then use the full strength toothpaste.
When do the baby teeth fall out?
Generally children will begin to lose baby teeth between 6-8 years of age and they should continue to lose baby teeth until approximately 12 years of age. After this your child may develop wisdom teeth. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s development please ask the dentist at your next appointment.
What do I do for a chipped, broken or knocked tooth?
If your child experiences a trauma which results in damage to the teeth or oral tissues we recommend you contact us as soon as possible to organize an examination.
What do we do when there are two rows of teeth?
If your child appears to have two rows of teeth do not be alarmed as this is just a part of the natural process by which the baby teeth are replaced by the adult teeth. Encourage your child to wiggle the baby teeth so as to speed up exfoliation (baby tooth loss). If the dentist feels the teeth are adversely affecting development they may recommend extraction.
Why worry about baby teeth?
Maintenance and care of baby teeth is very important for the proper growth and development of the adult teeth and the jaw. They maintain space for the adult teeth and are crucial in guiding the adult teeth into their correct positions. Baby teeth are also very important for speech development and eating.
What are fissure sealants?
A fissure sealant is a protective coating placed on the biting surfaces of the teeth to prevent tooth decay. It is often used on the first permanent molars. The first molars have deep fissures (grooves) which are susceptible to decay as the fissures can’t been cleaned properly. The sealant makes cleaning the tooth easier and will prevent decay in the pits and fissures.
